My Interview with CEO of Black Eden Publications, Sasha Ravae”
Q. What made you decide to write your very first book? ( I know Cliche’ but i think about writing books all the time, and I start and stop. lol)
A: I have always been an avid reader, and in high school, my best friend and I had our own little book club. We read people like Wahida Clark, Ashley & JaQuavis, Shannon Holmes, K’Wan, etc., so I fell in love with Urban Fiction. By the end of my senior year, I was convinced that I wanted to write a book too. Not even to become a writer but just because I felt like a good majority of the Urban Fiction books out at that time were based on the East Coast, and I’m from Northern California, and that’s when “Counterfeit Dreams” was born. It took 7 years for me to fully complete the story because I never intended on putting it out there like that, so there was never any pressure, but when I let a few of my family and friends read it, they encouraged me to self-publish it, and the rest is history!
Q. How does it feel to be a CEO at such a young age?
A: I LOVE owning my own business and the cherry on top is that I’m doing what I actually love to do. I don’t know if I would have been ready to handle all the responsibility that comes along with being a CEO maybe 5 years ago, but at 28, I am definitely ready to take on the challenges.
Q. Out of all your books, which one is your fave…why?
A: I love all my books for different reasons, but my first book “Counterfeit Dreams” will always be my favorite. I was only 18 when I started it, so I feel like you can see how I matured throughout the story, and it’s just dope! Lol…
Q. What would you tell our readers out there who want to pursue writing as a career?
A: I get asked this a lot actually, and I always tell people to study the craft. Many authors get into this industry very green and think that just because you have a good story that you’re set, but there’s so much more to it. Learn about the business side and constantly perfect your writing style with different techniques. I don’t think there’s ever a point where you “know it all” when it comes to writing just because language is so fluid and is always evolving.
Q. I know when I finished doing everything for PlzStayDope.. I was so nervous…Were you nervous about releasing your first book?
A: Of course!!! Anytime you create something and put it out for the world, there will be some people who lovd it and some people who don’t. I try not to take criticism personally, but as the saying goes, I’m still very sensitive about my sh*t. Lol…
Q. How can our readers contact you?
A: I’m everywhere for the most part. Readers can catch me on IG:
@xoxosasha_ravae, Twitter: @sasharavae, Facebook: Sasha Ravae, or email:email@example.com.
Q. Why the name Black Eden?
A: As a woman of color, I am extremely proud to be black, and my idea of the “Garden of Eden” embraces the same idea, so I kind of just put the two together.
Q. You graduated from CSU, How important is education to you?
A: Education is super important. I definitely enjoyed my time at Sac State (Go Hornets!), but a lot of my experience came from actually doing the work that I do now. I think that college can lay the foundation for you, but it’s also important to learn from life’s experiences as well, so I’m an advocate for life-long learning.
Q. Can you tell us about your next book and anything else coming up for Black Eden?
A: My next book is entitled “Ski Mask Schemes”. In 2013, I dropped a booked called “Ski Mask Divas”, so this book is more like the prequel. I’m very excited to release this one just because I feel like I answer a lot of questions my readers had from the first one, and I give a more complete picture of the characters.
As far as Black Eden goes, I have 5 authors on the roster including myself, and our goal for 2016 is just to keep coming with that fire, so that’s what our readers can expect.
Q. Last but not least what makes you and your company Black Eden PublicationsDope?
A: What makes Black Eden Publications dope is that we don’t follow the norm. There are a lot of trends in this industry right now, some I like and some I don’t…lol, but as authors, we never let that dictate how we write or what we write about. I love that all my authors are authentic and stay true to themselves no matter what. I honestly think our individuality and uniqueness make us the dopest!
