How to Become a Successful Writer - #5

5. Outline and then write to that outline.

This is a rule that I live by! As writers, our minds are constantly going whether we’re thinking about a multitude of stories, characters, etc., so for me, I like to “pave” the way for my story. I usually start with broad concepts to start my outline and add detail as needed that way when I go to actually write, I already know what direction I want to go in. Sometimes, your plot can be all over the place, so it’s best to be able to visualize it on paper, like a map. Try not to be too specific, i.e. adding dialogue unless it’s something you want to make sure you remember. You don’t want to be bogged down at this stage. Remember, at this point, nothing is final, so draft away!
