How to Become a Successful Writer - Tip #8

8. Accept all forms of criticism and learn to grow from it.

As a writer, when you put your work out there, you can expect to receive the good, the bad, and the ugly from readers, and it’s a MUST to know how to deal with criticism. Unfortunately, you’ll see many authors especially on social media call out readers for their negative reviews. Not only is it unprofessional, but it’s such a waste of time. Readers have the right to their opinions whether we like it or not. The best thing is to know how to grow from the criticism you receive. Now, I’m not saying that all negative comments are constructive. Some are definitely useless—“That book was stupid”, “I don’t like the author”, “I don’t like the cover”, etc. You can’t control receiving these type of reviews, but for those reviews that are constructive, I feel like you can grow from them and become a better writer in the process. Try not to be so sensitive because everybody is not going to like everything you do, and that’s okay! Adversity is a part of life, so remember the saying, “If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all” does NOT apply in the literary world.
