Counterfeit Dreams 4 - Chapter One (Excerpt)

June 8, 2016

I wrote this WAY before I got married, but it resonates so much more now. I LOVE Jewel and Reagan's relationship...they are the epitome of soulmates. Let's hope that they stay that way in Part 5... ; )

Counterfeit Dreams 4 - Chapter 1 (Excerpt)

“Marriage gives permanence and structure to a couple’s love. It’s a way to tell one another that no matter what, ‘we’re in this together.’ A good marriage must be built on a foundation of commitment. The little things are the big things. It’s never being too old to hold hands. It’s remembering to say, ‘I love you’ at least once a day. It’s never going to sleep angry. It’s standing together and facing the world. It’s having the capacity to forgive and forget. It’s giving each other an atmosphere in which each can grow. It’s a common search for the good and the beautiful…”

As the words left the pastor’s mouth, Jewel couldn’t help but to look over at Reagan and admire her beauty. The formfitting, ivory mermaid gown gripped her hips as it led down to a sea of organza blossoms. She worked hard over the past year to get her body back to where it used to be, and she scrapped her dark locs for her natural honey brown hair. She looked like the girl Jewel had met three years ago in the middle of the darkness in Rain, but she had been his light ever since.

“It’s not only about marrying the right partner but also being the right partner,” the pastor continued, “The road that has brought Reagan and Jewel here today hasn’t been an easy one. It’s been filled with challenges that neither were necessarily prepared for, but together, they’ve taken each one of those experiences and used them to strengthen their love. In 1 Corinthians, Chapter 13, verses 4-8 tells us, ‘Love is patient. Love is Kind. It doesn’t envy. It does not boast. It is not proud. It is not rude. It’s not self-seeking. It is not easily angered. It keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices in the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.’”

Reagan and Jewel had definitely been to the bottom. There was so much between them that separated them, but somehow they continued to find their way home. She didn’t see what he saw in her until she saw it for herself. He didn’t hold her to her past mistakes, so there was no reason why she was stuck on punishing herself. Through all of the fire and chaos with Brandon came a beautiful baby boy, and now, their family was complete. Reagan was thankful.

“Jewel and Reagan will now exchange rings to symbolize their commitment.” Jailen stepped forward allowing them to each take the other’s ring. “The wearing of these rings is a visible, outward sign that they have committed themselves to one another. Jewel, please take Reagan’s hand and repeat these words.”

He slowly turned to face her with nothing but a Kool-Aid smile on his face. From the moment he met her, he knew that he wanted to spend the rest of his life with her. He couldn’t excuse the pain she put him through or the pain he put her through, but all he knew was it hurt more to not have her there at all.

“I give you this ring as a symbol of our love.”

“I give you this ring as a symbol of our love.”

“For today and tomorrow, and for all the days to come.”

“For today and tomorrow, and for all the days to come.”

“Wear it as a sign of what we promised on this day.”

“Wear it as a sign of what we promised on this day.”

“And know that my love is present.”

“And know that my love is present.”

“Even when I’m not.”

“Even when I’m not.”

“Jewel, you may now place the ring on Reagan’s finger.” He slid a diamond encrusted band onto her hand matching the rock that was already there.

“Reagan, please take Jewel’s hand and repeat these words. I give you this ring as a symbol of our love.”

“I give you this ring as a symbol of our love,” she said as her voice shook a little.

“Even when I am not.”

“Even when I am not.” As soon as the last word left her lips, Reagan slipped Jewel’s solid white gold band on his finger officially making him hers for life.

“By sharing your vows and exchanging rings here today, you both have decided, under the one true God, to share the rest of your lives together. You are no longer two separate people but now one couple together. Reagan, do you take Jewel to be your husband, to live together in the sanctity of marriage? Do you promise to love him, comfort him, honor and keep him in sickness and in health, and forsaking all others for as long as you both shall live?”

“I do,” she said without question.

“Jewel, do you take Reagan to be your wife, to live together in the sanctity of marriage? Do you promise to love her, comfort her, honor and keep her in sickness and in health, and forsaking all others for as long as you both shall live?”

“I do,” he said ignoring Diamond’s resentful glances.

“If anyone objects to this marriage, please speak now or forever hold your peace,” the pastor said scanning the room. Jewel’s eyes immediately shot over to her. If she ruined this day for him, he didn’t know what he’d do. “By the power vested in me, I now pronounce you husband and wife. Jewel, you may now kiss your bride.”

Forgetting that the world even existed, he grabbed Reagan in his arms as she melted into his embrace. He lifted her veil already knowing the gift that awaited him underneath, but still her beauty blew him away.

“I love you,” he said lightly kissing her on the lips.

“I love you too,” she said wiping the tears from her eyes. She felt fireworks once their lips touched.

“It’s my great honor and privilege to be the first to present to you Mr. and Mrs. Jewel Noah Sanchez.”
