How to Become a Dope Writer - Tip #43

43. Learn to LOVE writing and reading.
I think being a writer and being a reader goes hand-in-hand. When I was in high school, I was introduced to "Flyy Girl" by Omar Tyree and "The Coldest Winter Ever" by Sister Souljah, and from there, I was hooked on Urban Fiction. I had always loved to read growing up, but I don't think that I ever read books that I could relate to on a personal level. This continued passion for reading is what sparked my interest in writing. When I initially wrote "Counterfeit Dreams", I did it just as a personal challenge. By the time I got out of high school, I had read so many books that I wanted to see if I could create something on my own. Now, with 10 books under my belt, I don't think much has changed. I still LOVE to read but for a lot of different reasons. What I used before as entertainment, I now see as a way to increase my knowledge or perfect my craft, but no matter what, I will always be a reader at heart.
What are some of your favorite books? We would love to hear from you!
xoxo,
